Back to school. . .

. . .in more ways than one. The students are coming back tomorrow after the Christmas holiday, but I'm referring to the "back to school" feel when we returned refreshed from our week of outdoor education (and well rested in our warm beds). We continued to study Deuteronomy, focusing on using our gifts and giving our best to God. Tobi (the blond above) was inspired to give more rides on her moto since it's really God's bike anyway. The 8th graders' learning expedition is about Ancient and Modern japan--the differences, and tying in the art to their discoveries. In English, we have been working on using vivid language to write a reminiscence of a significant memory and we'll continue revising tomorrow. But it hasn't been all work and no play. . . there was some Christmas fun before break and they were part of the program, and I hesitate to ask you to check out the less than flattering "portraits" of me above. You know how those 8th graders are!

Outdoor Education Week at Manabau

Well, we did it! We climbed a mountain, roasted a pig, survived the rain, and bonded with campfire stories and time huddled under our tarps fueled by lots of macaroni and spaghetti. We had class outside this week and were inspired by our surroundings despite the weather--misty mountains and fresh air. Most of all, we learned to work together and sacrifice for each other (it's not easy to share your last dry shirt) and some unexpected leaders emerged who had opportunities to show talents that aren't so easily seen seated behind a classroom desk. We are grateful for a safe and memorable trip!

A New Year!

It's hard to believe that we have been in school for a month already! Our eighth grade class is very energetic and loving. One of my favorite things about our class (--it's Kim, the teacher, writing) is that they love to pray for each other. Each morning in devotions, we've been studying Deuteronomy, (or as Enmanuel says, Dootereneonomy). We've been talking about the importance of looking back to see all the ways that God has taken care of us, and taking the time to thank Him for His many blessings. This year, God has already healed us of many illnesses, helped us focus and learn, and blessed us with a fun and happy atmosphere full of singing and laughter. Each class the students greet me with a hug (except for some of the boys who prefer a creative handshake) and I feel grateful for their warmth, care and unending enthusiasm! It feels like a family here. I hope they will be writing their own posts soon so you can hear from them yourselves.
